Defensive Coordinator, Eric Sorensen
Leaving GSC
Sorensen
will be leaving the Wolves in 2005. Sorensen, a native Long Islander
will be returning to his roots to pursue a teaching career at William
Floyd High School in Seldon, New York.
Sorensen crafted the defense for the Grand Street Campus Wolves and
helped the Wolves go undefeated in two of the last three seasons (2002,
2004). Sorensen was widely recognized as one of the top assistant coaches
in the PSAL. His resume includes 5 years of coaching experience, including
4 years as the Wolves Varsity Defensive Coordinator.
Under Eric’s tutelage, The Wolves quickly became known as one
of the most dominating defenses in the city. Eric’s off-field preparation
was relentless; he would spend hours reviewing films and developing practice
and game plans. However, it is on the field were Eric is at his best.
His quick thinking and decision making under pressure helped guide The
Wolves to two undefeated seasons in three years.
As a position coach, Eric prepared his players to perform at their
very best. In Eric’s tenure as running back coach, he had the skills
to produce 2002 PSAL leading rusher Javon Sistrunk.
As lead coach in our peer tutoring program, Eric led the way in our
efforts to fulfill our team’s academic needs. Eric managed to generate
a team grade point average of 81.7, a 93% class passing rate, and an
astonishing 100% passing rate on the Global History Regents.
After going 2-7 and allowing 207 points in 2001, Sorensen knew changes
needed to be made to the Wolves’ defense. Eric researched, attended
clinics, viewed film, and interviewed other coaches to develop a new
defense for the 2002 Wolves. As a result of his efforts, the 2002 Wolves
out scored their opponents 206-72 capturing there first undefeated season
in just there second year as a varsity team. Sorensen’s defense
registered 3 defensive shutouts and allowed only 1 rushing touchdown
in the regular season.
Once again, Sorensen’s defense played an integral role in the
Wolves’ 2004 undefeated season. This year, the Wolves defense only
allowed opponents to score 30 points in the regular season. In addition,
Sorensen’s crew pitched, an amazing, 5 defensive shutouts.
The defense will be taken over by Mike Lightfoot. Lightfoot’s
experience will bring a fundamentally sound and hard-hitting style of
defense to The Wolves
Coach Sorensen will be extremely missed by The Wolves. His passion,
excitement, and commitment to the game will forever burn in the players
that were lucky enough to be graced by his presence.
The Wolves will honor Sorensen for his dedication and vital role in
establishing the Wolves as a consistent contender for the PSAL title
by naming the prestigious Outstanding Linebacker of the Year Award in
his name.
