About Grand Street Campus
A Small School Setting
In
the Brooklyn, where the challenge is greatest, Grand Street Campus is
beginning to turn around decades of acceptance of low performing schools.
The campus that stands at 850 Grand Street is a wonderful representative
of the promise of the new small school strategy. Once—not long
ago—the high school that operated in this building, Eastern District,
consistently ranked among the lowest performing in the city.
Today, the three small schools that share this facility are delivering
dramatically stronger academic results. Once, more than 50 percent of
the students at Eastern District high school failed to be promoted from
the 9 th grade. Today, in a stark yet welcome contrast, more than 90
percent of students in these new schools, PROGRESS, Legal Studies, and
EBT, drawn from the same Brooklyn neighborhoods are passing their classes
and being promoted.
The small, academically rigorous high schools that have opened in the
Grand Street Campus are making a significant difference for their students.
They have higher attendance rates, they have higher course passing rates,
and they have higher promotion rates. In addition, they are putting students
on track for four-year graduation.
The Grand Street Campus includes a marvelous assortment of the ancillary
facilities that enhance school work, athletic fields, and libraries that
are shared among the schools.
Each school in the campus is unique. Progress
